The Biography of Joshua Sortino

My life is mysterious, dangerous and intriguing. For instance, did you know sharks have a week dedicated to me?

Okay, I may have exaggerated the "shark" thing, but I do occasionally swim with them. When I'm not doing that, I'm saving the world, dunking (almost) or building a more aesthetically pleasing and intuitive Internet. Honestly, the web is my greatest passion. Specifically, building a usable web is my biggest passion.

Since childhood, I have always been curious about how things work. Whenever I encounter an object, whether ordinary or unfamiliar, I ask myself, "What is the purpose of this item?" and, "Why was it made to function this way?" Often, these questions lead me to wonder, "Is there a more efficient way for this device to serve its purpose?" and, "How can I improve its usability?" I search for solutions because I desire more usable life experiences for myself and others. In a perfect world, nothing breaks and everything is instantly understood. An interface would be transparent to the user's goal.

At three years old with Windows 3.1, my first computer's operating system, I creating a digital image using "Paint". That was all it took for me to become addicted to art and design. During the next few years, I spent countless hours playing educational and artistic PC games (my favorites: Carmen Sandiego, The Incredible Machine, and Disney Magic Artist). These games laid the foundation for my future occupation as a designer. Fast forward to my tenth birthday, I purchased my first "real" image editor, Paint Shop Pro 7. For my Neopets guild "The Spy Masters Network", I built a website using very little CSS and virtually every HTML "hack" known. Shortly there after, I began to sell websites to friends, family, and even small businesses. My entrepreneurial personality surfaced. Eventually these odd jobs morphed into a full-time business, Fusion Web Designs.

Throughout the next decade, I learned to distinguish good design from bad. Improving on my CSS and HTML skill along the way, I was fortunate enough to work with hundreds of clients, designers, and developers to build websites, blogs, shopping carts, and more—I was even a server admin for a while. Reaching the mark of perfection may not be attainable, but I continue to strive for it with each click and keystroke. ¶
